Media training for Environmental and Sustainability Practitioners

In today’s complex landscape of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues, being able to communicate your work clearly and effectively to the media is a valuable skillset.

Over the years, our team has worked with sustainability practitioners to navigate the media landscape. From this experience we have developed our Media Training for Sustainability Professionals. This practical one-day session is designed to equip your team with the practical knowledge and skills needed to confidently engage with journalists, whether through written stories, on-camera interviews, or digital platforms.

We understand the unique communication challenges within environmental management, conservation, ecotourism, and social development. Our sessions are always contextualised to your industry and your company’s specific communication goals and current media presence.

Part 1: Theoretical Foundation:

  1. How the media works: Principles of news judgement and media expectations.
  2. Contextualised to your industry: Focus on current media trends, challenges, and opportunities specific to your company’s work.
  3. Building confidence: Techniques for managing nerves, body language, and on-camera presence.
  4. Crisis communication: Frameworks for swift, transparent, and consistent messaging during a crisis.
  5. Reviewing interviews: Analysis of best- and worst-practice case studies relevant to the sustainability sector.

Phase 2: Practical application and feedback

This is where the learning becomes tangible. Delegates will face the camera in realistic interview scenarios with a trained journalist.

  1. Mock interviews: 15 – 20 minutes per person of on-the-spot interviews.
  2. Personalised feedback: 15 minutes of constructive, practical tips following each interview, focusing on substance, style, and effective delivery.

Post-Session Support: Each delegate will receive a comprehensive Post-Session Manual detailing all techniques, tips, and frameworks covered during the workshop for long-term reference.
