For sustainability to take root within a company, your stakeholders need to understand what policies mean in practice, i.e. why they exist, how they work, and who is impacted by them. Communication is what makes that understanding possible.
Without a clear picture, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) becomes difficult to interpret, communicate or act on meaningfully. An integrated communication plan can strengthen EPR systems by helping different actors across the waste value chain, from producers to consumers and waste pickers, understand one another and work more cohesively. Better communication can build trust and create new opportunities for waste value creation.
Conservation science, by its very nature, aims to protect our planet's precious biodiversity. Yet, from our vantage point at SUSCO, working across South Africa's landscapes, we've seen it time and again: conservation science cannot operate in isolation if it truly seeks long-term success. It absolutely must be done in collaboration with communities.
Across South Africa, the effects of environmental injustice are deeply entangled with the challenges of poverty, unemployment and infrastructure breakdown. While these issues shape the daily lives of many young people, they are often excluded from the ways we speak about sustainability – both in terms of the narratives we construct and the practices we elevate.
